How much of your job search goes to jobs that are already gone?

A ghost job is a posting that is filled, canceled, or never real. Roughly one job in seven is already gone when you find it. Enter your own numbers to see the hours it costs you.

Get those hours back

  1. Favor jobs posted in the last week. Treat a listing that has sat for a month as a question, not an opportunity.
  2. Look for the role on the employer's own careers page before you apply. A posting that is gone from there is gone.
  3. Send fewer applications, and tailor each one to the posting in front of you.
  4. Apply once per company, then move on. A second application to the same req does not get read twice.

How this works

Hours lost = applications × ghost share × minutes per application, divided by 60. It counts the time you spend applying, and nothing else. It leaves out research, interviews, and travel, so the real cost is higher than the number above. These are estimates, not a guarantee.

Sources: the one-in-seven figure comes from an audit of 175,000 listings by Clarify Capital. Greenhouse measures 18–22% of postings as dead each quarter, and the widest platform audits reach 33%. The 62.6 applications and 44 minutes come from the 2026 United Way NCA job seeker survey. The 31-minute figure is a timed average reported by Zippia.
