How to answer “tell me about yourself” (with examples)

“Tell me about yourself” opens most interviews, and it trips people up because it’s so open-ended. It’s not an invitation to recite your life story — it’s your chance to frame the conversation. A reliable formula makes it easy.

The present–past–future formula

Answer in three short beats:

• Present — where you are now: your current role and a strength or two that matter for this job.
• Past — how you got here: a brief line on the experience that built those strengths, chosen for relevance, not chronology.
• Future — where you’re headed: why this role, at this company, is the logical next step.

Aim for about sixty to ninety seconds. You’re setting up the story you want them to explore, not covering everything.

Keep it relevant

Tailor the answer to the specific job. The strengths you highlight and the experience you mention should point straight at what this role needs. Leave out hobbies and personal history unless they’re genuinely relevant — this is a professional highlight reel.

Examples by career stage

Early-career: “I’m a recent graduate in marketing who’s spent the last year running social campaigns as an intern, where I grew engagement by a third. I got into it through a student project that took off, and I’m looking to bring that hands-on, data-driven approach to a small marketing team like yours.”

Experienced: “I’m a customer-success lead with six years managing enterprise accounts, currently owning a portfolio worth about four million in renewals. I moved into success after starting in support, which is why I care so much about the whole customer journey. I’m looking to bring that end-to-end perspective to a company scaling its success function — which is exactly what this role is about.”

Practice out loud

This is the one answer worth rehearsing until it’s smooth — because it sets the tone for everything after it. Say it aloud a few times so it sounds natural, not memorized.
